Why Are Regular Eye Exams Important?

For adults, an annual eye exam is key to ensuring your eyes remain healthy. Many eye conditions progress slowly and the symptoms might not be apparent, without an annual eye exam, those conditions can go unchecked and by the time symptoms appear, it could be too late. Catching the signs of eye conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration is critical to keeping your eyes healthy and happy.

Additionally, regular eye exams can help maintain the correct glasses or contact lens prescriptions. Without updated prescriptions, you may be dealing with blurry vision, which can be both frustrating and unsafe. Good visual acuity is important to live your life to the fullest.

How Often Should I Have an Eye Exam?

Eye health is one of the most important aspects of an overall healthy life and it’s also often overlooked. Most people know they should visit their primary care doctor once a year for their annual physical, and to the dentist twice a year for regular cleanings. But most people forget to visit their eye doctor once a year for an annual eye exam.

What Happens at an Eye Exam?

When someone comes to Rottman Eye Care for a routine eye exam, we will perform a comprehensive examination to get a full picture of the eye and overall eye health. That comprehensive eye exam can include tests to measure:

  • Acuity: To test for vision acuity, we will ask our patients to read a chart (called a Snellen Chart) at the end of the room. This will be done with each eye separately. Visual acuity is expressed as a fraction, like 20/20.
  • Fields: We will also test vision in each individual field to ensure patients can see clearly out of each part of their eye.
  • Pressures: We will use a small device to test the pressure behind each eye to ensure pressure is not elevated, a sign of glaucoma.
  • Retinas: Finally, we will dilate each eye to get a better look at the retinas, checking the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels.

Comprehensive eye exams are the best way to maintain eye health and visual clarity. If you are looking for eye exams from the best eye doctors in Grand Junction, you’re in the right place. Our team is here to help you protect your vision. Call us today to make an appointment.
